CREATION MOMENTS: 7.29.17

SCUBA GEAR FOR BACTERIA

Job 21:22

Shall any teach God knowledge? seeing he judgeth those that are high.
Biotechnology may be a new word to you. It’s a relatively new science. Biotechnology is the science of engineering custom-made life forms. For example, biotechnologists can add to a bacterium the gene that makes fireflies glow. This procedure gives the bacterium the ability to glow.

Today, many engineered bacteria have been designed. They make medicines, hormones, enzymes and even food products. As biotechnologists are learning more about how to custom-design bacteria, they are able to make bacteria that are better able to do their assigned jobs. The efficiency of bacteria in doing their jobs can be affected by how efficiently they use their food and how much oxygen they need. Getting enough oxygen to bacteria growing in vats is often a challenge.

Biotechnologists have now discovered a bacterium that does well in low-oxygen situations. It can get by with periods of lower oxygen because it makes hemoglobin, the same molecule that carries oxygen in our blood. The bacterium uses the hemoglobin much like scuba gear to help it breathe. Biotechnologists have successfully added the hemoglobin gene to bacteria to make an enzyme used in the commercial production of high-fructose corn syrup. As a result of their increased efficiency, these bacteria are now able to make twice as much enzyme.

Even so-called “simple” living things are a symphony of carefully designed abilities. Modern science is revealing that they are intelligently designed by our Creator.

Dear Lord, I thank You that You have allowed us to learn some of the secrets of how You designed life to work so that we may improve life here on earth. I pray that You would prosper the positive use of this knowledge and discourage any possible misuse. Amen.

SEPPHORIS

Matthew 6:2

Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
Nazareth, the town in which Jesus grew up, is often portrayed as a tiny backwater town. As a result, Jesus is often portrayed as an unsophisticated man. He has been painted many times as someone who could more easily relate to farmers and shepherds than to the city dweller. Biblical researchers point out that this is not an accurate picture of Jesus of Nazareth.

It is true that Nazareth was only a small village of 400 people in Jesus time. However, only four miles away stood Sepphoris, the main city and capital of Galilee and Perea. Today, Sepphoris is nothing but ruins. But in Jesus day, it was a bustling city of 30,000, fully linked to the trade routes of the empire. It was the royal residence of Herod Antipas. It also boasted a 4,000-seat theater, public baths, archives, gymnasium, water works, and other public buildings. In other words, rather than a tiny backwater town, Nazareth was a suburb of a major Roman capital!

Researchers have concluded that Jesus lived in a more urban and sophisticated culture than many have believed. This explains why many of Jesus parables talk about the policies of kings, tax collectors, wealthy landlords, and even actors. Yes, actors. In His teaching, Jesus often referred to hypocrites. The word hypocrite comes from the Greek word for stage actor. Stage actors, of course, pretend a role or play a part.

Not all scientists challenge Scripture. In this case, archaeology is helping us better understand the context of our Lords earthly life.

I thank You, Lord, that there are scientists who are working to help us better understand the Bible rather than to discredit it. Bless and prosper such work and those who do it so that Your Name may be more greatly glorified among us. Amen.

SMART LOBSTERS

Proverbs 21:24

Proud and haughty scorner is his name, who dealeth in proud wrath.
Do spiny lobsters know that they are a delicacy to many, if not most, of the carnivores on earth? New research into the social habits of spiny lobsters shows that much of their interaction with each other is based on the fact that they have learned to cooperate in order to survive their many predators.

Logic told researchers that a lobster would have a better chance of escaping predators by hiding in a small hole all by itself. Yet, lobsters are often found in groups of ten or more. Researchers wanted to know if the lobsters knew something they didnt.

They found that a lobster that was all alone would indeed hide in the smallest and most secure enclosure it could find. When more lobsters were present, however, they preferred to gather in larger enclosures. Lobsters that were not under threat from a predator would seek out roomier lairs. When a threat was present, they would still congregate, only in the smallest possible hiding place. This still made them more accessible to predators than if each was alone in a small hole. Researchers soon discovered that this disadvantage was outweighed because the larger group could more easily spot danger and alert the others. When threatened, the lobsters would face their attacker and try to fend it off by swatting it with their spiny antennae. The lobsters combined strategy was more effective than the strategy that seemed logical to the scientists.

This example shows us the limitations of science. The Creator made lobsters even smarter than scientists when it comes to lobster self-protection.

Dear Father, there is much pressure today to accept what science says, even when it disagrees with Your Word.  Help me to see where and how this pressure affects me so that I may identify the problem and have a stronger, more informed faith. In Jesus Name. Amen.

 STONE MAKERS

Ephesians 2:8-9

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Modern sophisticated laboratories have produced many specialized materials with amazing qualities. Yet, many creatures make ceramic materials that are stronger and tougher. If a crack starts in a piece of our ceramic, over time it grows. The same crack will not grow in ceramic made by the oyster.

Human and animal bodies custom-form teeth for a variety of purposes. When science makes such materials, it uses heat, chemicals and high pressure. One scientist noted that it would take experts in five or six scientific disciplines to figure out how living things form these materials.

Scientists have been trying to learn how creatures that make stony materials do it. Most of what they have learned has left them astonished at the quality of the materials, even if they have learned little about the process. They believe that special cells in the body use proteins and other large molecules to form non-organic molecules into stony materials. It appears that many creatures can control the formation of crystals. For example, in the abalone shell, crystals and glue are stacked in brick-and-mortar fashion in such a way that they become stronger under pressure. At the same time, the structure allows them to be formed into intricate shapes.

Our best human efforts cannot match Gods gifts. Our best human behavior cannot make us good enough for God. Only the forgiveness of sins that comes by grace through faith in Christ can do that.

Our dear heavenly Father, I thank You that You have sent Your Son, Jesus Christ, to work out my salvation. I thank You for Your forgiving grace that assures me of the forgiveness of my sins and Your love. In Jesus Name. Amen.

TAKING A BITE OUT OF STRESS

Psalm 130:4

But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.
Research has repeatedly shown that dogs can be an effective sedative. Continued research has now shown that dogs can relieve more stress and promote better health than even the presence of a close friend will do.

A 1980 study showed pet owners who had been hospitalized for heart disease had a better survival rate and were healthier than heart patients without pets. Another study showed that elderly pet owners had fewer visits to their doctors than those with no pets.

New research shows that dogs lower blood pressure and other bodily responses to stress even better than the presence of a good friend. Researchers subjected volunteers to stress by asking them to count backwards by threes, then sevens, then thirteens and seventeens. As they counted, their stress levels were measured. The tests were done in volunteers homes. Some volunteers had dogs, others had a friend sitting nearby. Those with friends nearby did their mental arithmetic more rapidly, but less accurately, than those with dogs. Those who had earlier performed well in the presence of their dog did more poorly when the dog was removed and a friend was nearby.

Researchers explained these findings by pointing out that dogs provide unconditional support. God offers us the unconditional forgiveness of our sins, by grace through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. Thats why Scripture connects the forgiveness of our sins with peace in this life and forever.

I thank You, my dear heavenly Father, for Your unconditional forgiveness of my sins. If it had been up to me to earn Your forgiveness, I would be lost forever. Grant me a greater faith and a more full realization of Your peace. In Jesus Name. Amen.

CREATION MOMENTS: 7.22.17

HOW TO ENGINEER A BETTER TURTLE

Genesis 1:21

And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
Leatherback turtles make use of far more of the sea than most creatures. They can dive to depths of over 4,000 feet. They prefer cold, open ocean waters but lay their eggs on tropical beaches. Not only are they found all over the world, but the same individual may be found all over the world. In 1970, a turtle that was tagged off the South American coast also turned up just off the West African coast, almost 4,000 miles away.

Leatherbacks are uniquely designed, inside and out, to travel the world’s seas. Their bodies are teardrop shaped. This gives them nearly ideal efficiency traveling through water. In addition, they have seven ridges along the length of their upper shell, further increasing the efficiency of water flow around them. Their bodies, including the shell, are covered with a very smooth, leathery skin. Studies of leatherback hatchlings show that they use 20 percent less energy to swim through the water than any other turtle hatchling.

Leatherbacks live their entire lives in the open sea, except for a trip to shore to lay eggs every few years. They almost never stop moving. Scientists who attached radio monitors to leatherbacks were astonished to find that they swim and dive day and night, never stopping to sleep. Their front flippers are more than half the length of the entire body. They are driven by powerful pectoral muscles that can make up as much as 30 percent of the turtle’s weight.

The leatherback turtle is a marvelously designed creature whose very existence glorifies our Creator.

Lord, I thank You for the excellence You put into everything that You have made. Help my every effort that it might be my best and most excellent offering to You in thanksgiving for Your goodness to me. Amen.

MUSIC GRASS

Genesis 4:21

And his brothers name was Jubal: he was the father of all such as handle the harp and organ.
Reed instruments like the oboe and clarinet trace their ancestry back to instruments made by the Egyptians more than 4,000 years ago. An Egyptian relief dated to about 2700 B.C. shows a clarinet- type instrument.

This means that humans have been dealing with the problem of making reeds work in reed instruments for thousands of years. Natural reeds can crack, break and make awful honking noises as they age and wear out. Today, many musicians use plastic reeds. Still, professional musicians reject the sound of plastic reeds as inferior for public performance. As one professional musician put it, They sound kind of like a duck with laryngitis.

Reeds are fashioned from the giant reed plant. This large grass grows to a height of seven or eight feet. Reeds are made from the sections between the nodes. However, a seven-foot stalk may have only 25 sections that are the right dimensions for an oboe reed. After harvesting and curing, a process that takes nine months, sections are selected on the basis of size and color. One plant may produce only one oboe reed. The goal is to obtain a reed that has a crisp tone over a wide range of notes. Out of a box of 100 reeds, which can cost $150, the professional musician may find two that he considers excellent.

Making music is one of the earliest human activities described in the Bible. The mention of music early in Genesis shows us that the earliest people were just as human as people today.

I thank You, dear heavenly Father, for the gift of music. Help us to use music to praise You and rejoice in Your generous goodness to us. In Jesus Name. Amen.

MASTERS OF MIMICRY

Isaiah 40:28

Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.
Though they are only insects, stick insects seem to have an amazing knowledge of their surroundings. They are geniuses at using their predators weakness for their own protection.

Stick insects are leaf eaters. Many of them look like little twigs. The longest insect in the world is a walking stick from Borneo that reaches a length of 13 inches. A tropical stick is as thick as a finger and the same color as the bamboo on which it is often found. It also has swollen ridges that make it look even more like bamboo. Other types have leafy flaps that match the leaves of the plants they frequent. Some stick insects go even further. They lay eggs that look exactly like the seeds of the plant on which they feed. A stick thats found in New Mexico glues its eggs to grass stems. The position and shape of the long pointed eggs exactly mimic the seeds of that species of grass.

While they dont fly, some sticks have brightly colored wings that they can rapidly unfurl. They use this ability to startle away nervous birds who might want to investigate them for lunch. Sticks will often sway with the breeze to make their illusion more effective. Some sticks will sit motionless for hours. Some birds understand this and will closely examine non-moving twigs. Sticks will often refuse to move even when being carried away by a bird. This tactic has fooled many birds into thinking it really was a twig and releasing it.

Stick insects are clearly not the result of mindless chance. Their intelligence was created by the Creator of the universe.

Dear Lord, I can never thank You enough that You are the Creator and in charge of the universe. Many in our world do not know this and live in hopelessness. Help us to reach them in their hopelessness with Your good news. Amen.

 NATURAL MUSICAL ABILITIES

Ephesians 5:19-20

Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;
We have previously reported on research that shows that human beings are born with a natural language ability. We are not only born with a hunger to learn language, we are also born with certain expectations about what language is. This fact can only serve as a witness to the Creator and His genius.

Now research into how infants respond to music has shown that we are also born with a readiness to learn the basics of what music should sound like. Western major and minor scales follow a certain mathematical pattern. However, the Javanese pelog scale is based on much more complex mathematical relationships. Those who have grown up with Western musical patterns find that music written in the pelog system sounds weird to their ears. When does this sense that tells us that certain mathematical patterns of notes dont fit together develop?

To find out, researchers tested adults and six-month-olds. Adults can easily identify notes that dont seem to fit in a string. The infants had been trained to look at a speaker when a note was not in tune. When they were right, they were rewarded by watching the actions of an animated toy. Infants that had been trained in both Western and pelog scales did better at identifying mistuned pelog notes than untrained adults.

Music is a gift of God. We find music used and referred to from early in Genesis to the end of the book of Revelation. The greatest use we can make of music is in praise of our Creator.

I thank You, Lord, for the gift of music. It makes our hearts glad and gives us yet another way to worship You. Help Your people always make use of music. Amen.

 REPTILIAN HOUSING DEVELOPMENT EXPERT

Psalm 40:5

Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.
He looks slow and unimportant. He spends 90 percent of his time underground. But the gopher tortoise constructs a housing development that is home to over 360 species. In addition, his tunnels provide emergency shelter to many other creatures during forest fires.

Gopher tortoise burrows are often 30 feet long and may extend to a depth of 15 feet. The record length of a tunnel is nearly 50 feet. One tortoise may dig or enlarge many tunnels over its 60-year lifetime. Obviously, the tortoise is well-designed for digging, with spade-like front legs. The tortoise is a vegetarian. It is found in temperate climates, so its burrow serves to protect it from winter temperatures that are dangerous to reptiles. In addition, the tortoise has a large urinary bladder touching the back of its shell that acts as a hot-water bottle. The tortoise heats the water by aiming its back at the sun.

Because the tortoise can weigh over 10 pounds, its tunnels are large enough to accommodate many creatures. The Florida mouse will dig several tunnels off the main tunnel that it calls home. Insects, lizards, snakes, alligators, bobcats, and even wild turkeys, burrowing owls, wrens and robins use the burrow for shelter or to look for food. Abandoned burrows may be used by foxes, skunks and other mammals for dens.

The gopher tortoise, now endangered, has been designed by the Creator to make the forest community richer and more diverse.

Father in heaven, I ask that you would move those who can do something for the gopher tortoise to take reasonable steps to preserve this wonderful creature in forested areas. In Jesus Name. Amen.

THE NEW EARTH !!!

The new earth

Christ’s victory over the Fall

There is a lot of confusion over the doctrine of heaven and the future new heavens and earth. Many Christians, while they look forward to being with Jesus after our physical death here on earth, do not have a real idea of what our eternal existence will ‘look like’ or entail. Often, they read about the new heavens and earth described inRevelation 21–22 and then imagine existing forever in some sort of ethereal realm, instead of eternal existence in a real, restored, physical universe. However, the Bible has a lot to tell us about what we have to look forward to, and understanding our future state also helps us to understand what we lost when Adam fell. This also has serious implications for those who want to allegorize the Creation events in Genesis in order to add millions of years of evolutionary history.
In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul takes a bold stance on the Resurrection:
Now if Christ is proclaimed as being raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain, and your faith is in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied” (15:12–19).
Paul is saying that we must believe in the physical resurrection of Christ to be saved—it’s that important. This is because our future resurrection—what we look forward to—is the same sort of resurrection as Jesus’. So the resurrection of the dead is a Gospel issue; you can’t be a Christian and not believe that we (believers) will live forever with Christ—in real, physical, resurrected bodies. But where will those bodies live? Scripture’s testimony is clear and unanimous that the new heavens and earth (hereafter NHE) will be a physical (yet also spiritual) realm.
Before we go on we would like to point out that, although we need to look into future times (eschatology) to discuss the issue, we are not taking some denominational or eschatological position that falls outside of our ministry’s mandate of dealing with origins (our reasons are explained in End-times and Early-times). As we shall see, a fully restored creation (as outlined in the book of Revelation and elsewhere in Scripture) is unequivocally linked to the events in the Garden of Eden and is part of all mainstream eschatological views. The doctrine of a NHE has been a standard core doctrine of the evangelical church and all of the mainstream (non-cultic) denominations throughout all of Christian history.

This present world will end

The Bible teaches that this present earth (indeed all of creation; cf. Rom 8:22) is cursed because of the presence of sin and will be destroyed. Peter writes:
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies [or ‘elements’] will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt away as they burn! But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace” (2 Peter 3:10–14).
Note that Peter is not using figures of speech. Indeed, just before this, he reminds his readers that God had previously judged the whole globe with a cataclysmic flood in history. He does not say, “It will be as if the heavens are being burnt up”. In straightforward language, he is saying that God is actually going to burn up the universe and set up a “new heavens and earth in which righteousness dwells”. And he uses this fact to tell his audience to live a life befitting citizens of the new heavens and earth.
It is not a hyperbole to call them an “uncreation” of the heavens and earth—many judgments in the Bible are reversals of creation; for example, the Flood reversed creation to the time before the land was separated from the seas on Day 2, and Jeremiah 4:23 alludes to a future uncreation that reverses the universe back to the state described in Genesis 1:2.
Again, depending on one’s eschatological stance, many of the various judgments in Revelation (e.g. one third of mankind killed [9:15]) may be presented either with some symbolic meaning or a more literal meaning, but this distracts from the main point of this article—what happens at the end. It is not our point to discuss the details, but to clearly present the big picture, and this is that the present Creation will suffer terrible, utterly destructive judgment because of sin. But the destruction is not the end of the story, because God will create a new heaven and a new earth “for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away” (Revelation 21:1) and believers will live in that new creation for eternity.

Why will this world be destroyed?

To destroy a whole universe seems a rather drastic solution to the problem of a fallen world. However, Scripture is clear that the whole creation fell. Romans 8:19–23 says:
For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies” (emphases ours).
When Adam sinned, the earth was cursed because of him (Genesis 3:17–19), and the earth was further polluted by murder, violence, and immorality (6:11–12; Leviticus 18:24–28; Numbers 35:33; Psalm 106:38; Jeremiah 3:2, 9; 16:18). But it is not just the dirt on the surface of the earth; it is the entire universe, all of creation (Greek ktisis), that is cursed. Thus, all of creation is in need of restoration.
Because the creation has been affected by the Curse and further polluted by man’s sin, it is not a suitable place for resurrected, perfect people to live. How could we live among fossils, graveyards and reminders of death (even if their inhabitants were vacated), and a Flood-scarred earth that bore testimony to God’s great judgment of sin? How can we live forever next to a star that has a limited lifespan or in a universe with built-in, non-eternal features that will eventually die of ‘heat death’? All of this is a reminder that death is an enemy that beset all of Creation, and a reminder that Christ has conquered death, thus, giving us something to look forward to:
For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. … The last enemy to be destroyed is death” (1 Cor. 15:21–22, 26).
Just as our bodies die, and return to dust, they will be raised as new bodies that nevertheless have continuity with our former selves, likewise the earth is fallen and will be destroyed, but it will be destroyed in order to be renewed. The restoration of the earth is directly analogous with the resurrection of the redeemed in Christ. Just as we have to die before we are resurrected, the earth must be destroyed before it is renewed. It is not an ‘ultimate’ or final destruction; it is a destruction that clears the way for its re-creation.

The new world we look forward to

Genesis uses the phrase “heavens and earth” to encompass all of the physical creation (the universe). When the Bible (2 Peter 3:13, Revelation 21–22) uses the phrase “new heavens and earth”, it is has a similarly all-encompassing meaning. It is an indication of the continuity of the new creation with the old. But the word ‘new’ has the connotation of “superior” or “improved”, such that the old will be obsolete.1
We are given several images of the new world. If we want to see what an unfallen physical creation looks like, the obvious place to start is Eden. Eden is a picture of God’s ideal paradise on earth. It was a place especially suited for humans to live comfortably and engage in easy, pleasant work (Genesis 2:15) and for the purposes of appreciating their Creator. All Adam and Eve’s needs were provided for, and they were in regular, direct fellowship with God. There was no sin, no death, and no barrier to mankind’s relationship with God.
In the NHE there is a return to a sinless state with no suffering or evil of any kind, and unlimited access to God (Revelation 21:3–4). All of this is possible because of Christ’s sacrifice in paying for our sins. But it is even better than the original creation, because it is not a simple return to Eden. Rather, God will redeem the best parts of culture as well as the earth.
The best advance in the new heavens and earth will be that there will never be any possibility for sin or another Fall. “Since ‘the wages of sin is death’ (Romans 6:23), the promise of no more death is a promise a promise of no more sin. Those who will never die can never sin, since death is a punishment for sin. Sin results in mourning, crying, and pain. If those will never occur again, then sin can never occur again.”2

Will the new earth be physical?

As we mentioned earlier, some people think our eternal destination is an ethereal place populated by disembodied spirits. But that makes the mistake of confusing two places: the place where believers who die await the resurrection (variously called Paradise or Heaven), and the place we will exist after the consummation of all things eschatological. On this Paul wrote:
So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord … Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord” (2 Cor 5:6, 8).

The Bible is clear that, although believers who die are “at home with the Lord”, they still await the resurrection of the dead, when our bodies will be transformed to be like Jesus’. Again Paul says:
So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable”, (1 Cor 15:42).
We will also be morally perfected at that time so we will never sin.
The NHE will be as physical as the current heavens and earth. Just as the place where perfect people will live cannot be fallen, it also cannot be ethereal and non-physical. We will need a physical, material world to live in then just as much as we do now. And the Bible’s descriptions of this world include re-created animals and trees, cities, streets, rivers, and other physical things. Conversely, the new earth is never described in ‘ethereal’ or ghostly terms.

What about the ‘spiritual body’?

In 1 Corinthians 15:44, Paul says, “It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body.” Some people take this to mean that when we are raised, we will be some sort of ethereal being. This interpretation misunderstands what Paul means when he calls our earthly bodies “natural” and our resurrection bodies “spiritual” (see Christ as the Last Adam). It doesn’t refer to the ‘stuff’ the body is made of, but of what motivates us and drives our desires. E.g. Paul previously referred to a ‘spiritual’ person, using the same Greek word pneumatikos, and it was obviously a physical person (1 Corinthians 2:15). Let’s remember that even in our sinful physical bodies we are still spiritual beings. Even the Lord Jesus was referred to as a ‘life-giving” or “quickening spirit”. The point being made that one can be physical and spiritual at the same time. And in the same way, the NHE will be both a physical and spiritual place. The spirit is not the sum of our being but part of it. This is why God first made the body of Adam from the dust of the ground, then breathed on him and this man became ‘a living creature’ or ‘living soul’ (Hebrew nephesh chayyah, Genesis 2:7).
Currently, even at our best we’re sinful, even though we’re forgiven sinners. In the resurrection, our desires will be perfectly aligned with God’s will. Not only will we not be able to sin, we won’t want to sin. It will be incomprehensible to us to sin.

Will we experience time?

If the NHE will be made of matter, then it will take up space. And we know that space (size) and time are connected and related to each other. It is a common belief that eternal life will be timeless, but that is not really correct. Time, as we understand it, began with the creation of the physical universe. And the timeframe used in the Bible is the earth’s. When the earth rotates with a light source on it, it defines a day. So only God is outside of time, because He preceded what He created—only that which has no beginning in time can ever be outside of time. Every created being experiences and will always experience life as a continuous series of events, one moment after another. When we sing a hymn in heaven, we will sing one word after another in time and we will need to count the bars of the song over time. If we go from one place to another, it will take us time to travel. It’s uncertain how that time will be measured, but it will certainly be experienced in some form.

God’s triumph in the restored creation

One important theological reason that the new earth has to be physical is simply: if God does not redeem or restore the physical world, then Satan wins, because he would have foiled God’s original purpose in creating. We’re told that God will undo everything Satan did, and He will make creation even better than before.
By the end of Revelation, sin is gone. In addition, God gets praised because of His mercy and grace, and Jesus is glorified as the Saviour of the nations. Humans are resurrected. We’re not just sinless in the Resurrection; we’re positively righteous and can never fall again. The earth must similarly be restored, or there is a huge gap in how we perceive God’s redemptive work.

Compromise on Genesis creates an NHE problem

When one reads of the restored creation and the New Heavens and Earth, particularly in chapters 21 and 22 of Revelation, it is absolutely clear that this is analogous to what God originally did in Genesis 1. They are inexorably intertwined. He is sovereign and finally has His way and we can only marvel at His plan—even though He knew of Satan’s plans in advance.
Those who believe that God somehow used a process of millions of years of evolution have a huge inconsistency problem here. Presumably they have no problem with what is often called the ‘Blessed Hope’—this future eternal paradise where all believers will live forever in a restored universe, recreated miraculously and instantaneously by God. But because it is analogous to Genesis 1, then how could God have used a process of death and suffering to create the original? Simply, is God going to restore things back to millions of years of death and suffering? Moreover, if in the NHE we can see stars billions of light years away, do we then think that God ‘recreated’ and stretched out space over billions of years again (according to an old-Earth view of Genesis). Of course, that makes no sense. One option would be to allegorize the concept of a NHE just as is done with Genesis 1, but one then has to wonder why bother being saved because one cannot be sure of the future state or have any real hope of what there is to look forward to. In short, if God’s original design involved millions of years of death and suffering, then what is wrong with this creation? Why destroy it and create a new one?
The NHE doctrine only makes sense within a creation/fall/restoration framework. If God created a perfect world with no sin or death, it makes sense that God will restore it to a perfect world with no sin or death. But every old-earth or evolutionary view puts death before Adam was created. This does not come from Scripture but from deference to a philosophical assumption callednaturalism (the belief that natural processes can explain everything that has ever happened in the history of the universe). So to some extent, it makes death part of God’s originally ‘very good’ creation (cf. Genesis 1:31). The NHE tells us what God’s intended creation looks like—but in the view of the compromisers, why didn’t He simply create it that way to begin with? The NHE is a powerful testimony to the original very good creation.
Paul tells us, “‘What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him’—these things has God revealed to us through the Spirit” (1 Corinthians 2:9–10a). The Bible tells us exactly what we have to look forward to when we trust in Jesus—eternal life in a perfect resurrection body, in a physical restored body, in perfect sinless fellowship with God.

A NOT-SO-HARD SAYING OF JESUS

Matthew 8:22

“But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead.”
Twice in the Gospels, Jesus is asked by a disciple for a leave of absence to bury his father. In each case, Jesus tells the disciple to let the dead bury their own dead.

This has been described as one of Jesus’ hard sayings, since it suggests that a son should follow Jesus rather than honor his father. The passage is usually explained as meaning that the spiritually dead - that is, those not following Jesus - should bury the physically dead. This explanation still doesn’t explain the apparent advice to break the commandment about honoring our parents.

A better explanation is offered in an article in Archaeology and Biblical Research. Archaeologist Gordon Franz explains Jewish burial practices at the time of Jesus. At death, the body would be placed in the family burial cave. After about a year, the body would have decomposed. Then the final act of mourning would take place. The bones were placed in a chest in what was called a secondary burial. According to the rabbis, the decomposition of the flesh was a person’s final atonement for sin. Once this atonement was made, the bones could finally be laid to rest.

Franz says it is this secondary burial for which the disciples wanted leave time. Jesus’ reference to the dead burying the dead was a reference to the other corpses in the burial cave. He was teaching that the rabbis’ teaching about atonement was wrong. Atonement is found only in the saving work of Jesus Christ – the very message that the disciples should have been proclaiming.

I thank You, Lord Jesus, that in Your innocent suffering and death You made full and complete atonement for my sin. Equip me to better tell others that You have made our peace with God, and let my life reflect Your love. Amen.

ANT EMPIRES

Romans 13:13

Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
Like an ancient empire, there is a species of ant whose entire society is built on slavery. In fact, raids to capture more slaves are about the only thing resembling work that western slavemaker ants do.

Western slavemakers are a species of red ant. Their survival depends on making slaves out of a related species of ant. Their slave- capturing raids are dramatic. After a scout finds a suitable nest to raid, an impressive raiding party is formed. As many as 2,500 individual ants swarm into an army that can be 3 feet wide and 16 feet long. When they reach the nest, the ants spray it with a chemical that causes the inhabitants to leave. Raiders then capture the pupae and return them to the slavemaker nest. The only life the captives will ever know is one of slavery. A single slavemaker colony may steal as many as 30,000 slaves a year.

A slavemaker nest may have 6,000 slaves to serve every need of 3,000 inhabitants. Scientists have found that hunger in the slavemaker nest is the primary cause of raids to increase the slave population. Well-fed colonies engage in fewer raids. If the slavemaker colony moves, the slaves must carry each slavemaker ant to the new location.

We see a connection between the slavemakers, who work only to bring what we would regard as misery to others, and their failure to produce anything positive. This illustrates the Bibles warning that unproductive lives and strife go hand in hand.

Dear Father, I thank You that through the innocent suffering and death of Your Son, Jesus Christ, on my behalf, I am freed from slavery to sin. Help my life to be productive for You and free from the strife that results from our sin. In Jesus Name. Amen.

 BEAUTIFUL LOYALTY

1 Corinthians 7:10

And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband:
Most water fowl are faithful to one mate over long periods of time. The swan, in particular, champions marital fidelity.

In North America they are called whistling swans or tundra swans. Another member of the same species is usually found in Europe and Asia, where it is called Bewicks swan. Researchers report that each has a unique pattern of yellow and black on its bill, making individuals easy to identify. This allowed researchers to trace their lives over many years.

These beautiful creatures have relatively long life spans. One individual was traced for 26 years. Typically laying four eggs in nesting season, they breed for most of their lives. They are highly territorial. In a face-off for food or nesting area, the largest male is usually the winner. When there is a disagreement, the males face each other while their mates cheer them from the sidelines. Single swans enjoying a nice discovery of food are often driven off by couples. Couples are faithful for life. Researchers say that they have recorded no cases of divorce among successfully reproducing couples. Nor do they report any case of marital infidelity among swans. If a mate is lost, the survivor often takes over a year to settle down with another mate. In one case, a survivor waited for six years.

Marital fidelity is also Gods instruction to humans. Today many factors are allowed to challenge marital infidelity. Often, infidelity before or after marriage is portrayed as simply normal. But if swans can manage fidelity, we humans have no excuse for infidelity.

I thank You, dear Father, for the gift of marriage. Help Christians, both young and old, to resist the pressures around us to misuse sex. Help us to be a positive example in a society that shows a decreasing respect for marriage and that increasingly suffers from the curses brought about by infidelity. In Jesus Name. Amen.

GLOW-IN-THE-DARK FLOWERS

Psalm 96:12-13a

Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein: then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice Before the LORD:
Researchers at Stanford University surprised scientific colleagues several years ago when they proved that plants were not well, vegetative. We think of plants as things that sit and grow, not as living things that can react to their environment. Now researchers at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, have shown that plants not only react to the environment, they react with the same immediacy as animals.

The Edinburgh researchers knew that plants react to a breeze or other wind movement by adding calcium to their cell walls. Plant cell walls typically have calcium in them. The calcium acts as an internal skeleton, giving strength to the plant. When stressed by wind currents, plants strengthen themselves by adding more calcium to their cell walls.

Researchers used a novel method to study how quickly plants react. They added to the plants jellyfish genes that bind to calcium and glow blue as the calcium level increases. Then they squirted the plants with puffs of air. The increased blue glow showed that plants react almost immediately to air movement by adding calcium to their cells. The researchers have been contacted by private companies that want to find out whether this technique can be used to develop glow- in-the-dark flowers or glowing grass to plant around airport runways.

When God created plants, He gave them abilities that seem surprising to those who think that they are a simple form of life.

I thank You, Lord, that You have filled Your creation with wonders beyond counting. I ask that You would help me identify the effects of evolutionary thinking that devalue the wonder of Your creation in my thinking so that I may better praise You. Amen.

 HAIRY DRUG FACTORIES

Matthew 13:22

He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.
We are all familiar with the fact that the very tips of most plant roots have tiny hairs. These hairs seek out water and nourishment from the soil and absorb them for distribution in the plant. Few people beyond some biologists and chemists are aware that these delicate portions of some plants are able to produce a large variety of important medicines. Often, the hairy parts of plant roots are able to make medicines that even our best chemists and genetic engineers cannot make.

The hairy roots of plants have been used to make certain medications for over two generations. But it was only recently that scientists discovered that by infecting seedlings with a certain bacterium, they could produce versions of plants that were nothing but hairy roots. Another benefit of this new procedure was that the hairy roots never stopped growing or making medicine.

Periwinkle hair roots make 75 different alkaloids, including caffeine, nicotine, and two medications important in cancer treatment. Antidotes for motion sickness and nerve gas poisoning are made by henbane roots. Gourd roots make important agricultural chemicals. Relatives of the Chinese cucumber make anti-fungus chemicals. And, as many gardeners know, marigold roots make chemicals that act against nematodes and fungus.

While human sin has made the creation less than perfect, our merciful Creator has, with foresight, provided solutions to many of our earthly problems.

Heavenly Father, I thank You that You have so generously provided us with solutions to so many of the problems we face because sin has ruined Your creation. Never let my earthly problems, or their solutions, distract me from my need for forgiveness of my sins through Jesus Christ. Amen.

THOROUGHLY MODERN LAMPREY

Genesis 1:20a

And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life.
Lampreys are very odd creatures. They are fish, and hence are vertebrates. However, they have no jaw, so many species of lamprey are parasitic, burrowing into the flesh of other fish, with their toothed, tunnel-like mouths, in order to suck their blood. A recent article on the Science Daily website said this about them:

While many would be repulsed by these creatures, lamprey are exciting to biologists because they are so primitive, retaining many characteristics similar to their ancient ancestors and thus offering answers to some of life's biggest evolutionary questions.

What evolutionary questions do they think that lampreys answer? Apparently the neurons in their gut are significantly different from those in “modern” vertebrates, so these materials, as well as the jaw, must have evolved from the types found in the lamprey. The work reported in the Science Daily article appears to have that frequent combination of careful, well-executed observational science, coupled with false presuppositions from an evolutionary paradigm. Exemplary experimental work shows how the lamprey manufacture their neurons from the precursor cells. However, the evolutionary assumptions are easily challenged, because fossil lamprey have been discovered in rocks, which are considered by evolutionists to be 360 million years old.

As creationists, we have no problem with accurate and careful observational and experimental science. However, what we see, in the reporting of this research, is the desire to interpret all results according to evolutionary and deep-time narratives, although such re-interpretation is not required by the evidence.

Lord God, Your control over Your creation is such that you found pennies in the mouth of a fish to pay tax! Thank You, Lord, that You have made everything well, and that nothing has happened by chance. Amen.

THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE

Genesis 8:22

While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.
The Northwest Passage is, in many ways, the stuff of legend. It is the idea that there could be a shipping route around the North Coast of Canada. This would provide a much quicker route, than existing routes, for ships to get, for example, from Europe to India and China. For centuries, explorers have tried to find this route. For example, during Elizabethan times, English privateer Sir Martin Frobisher undertook three voyages to try to find it.

The reason that such explorers could not sail around the north of North America is because of the ice covering most of the Arctic Ocean. However, in recent years, there have been a couple of occasions – notably in 2007 and 2008, when the passage has been open to shipping, as ice has melted. For Climate Change Alarmists, this causes mixed feelings. On the negative side, they are concerned that the Arctic Ice has melted, because of carbon dioxide, produced by human industrial activity – the so-called Anthropogenic Global Warming (AGW). On the positive side, they recognize that the commercial exploitation of such a route would considerably shorten many of the world’s shipping routes, and save large amounts of the fossil fuels which most concern these Alarmists.

Perhaps the desire to find this fabled route was fueled by a real history of earlier navigators actually using the route. Such a history would be difficult for Alarmists to accept, but would make sense to biblical scholars, convinced that there are natural cycles of warming and cooling, as God maintains the world in which we live.

Thank You, Lord, for the provision that You have given us in this world. Help us to use wisely the resources, which You have put under our control. Amen.

DID APES EVOLVE TO EAT MORE FRUIT?

Genesis 2:16-17

And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
Britains Telegraph newspaper carried a fascinating article, recently, with a new spin on the myth of the evolution of human beings: that apes evolved into humans, by eating lots of fruit.

The NYU scientists report, published in Nature, is entitled Primate brain size is predicted by diet but not sociality. Previous evolutionary models suggested that development of apes brains was caused by their social interaction. As they picked fleas off one another, they needed to think more deeply about abstract concepts. However, the NYU researchers have noticed that there is a correlation between the amount of fruit eaten, and the sizes of the brains of non-human primates.

The team have studied over 140 species, and were careful to study any correlation between social behavior and brain sizebut no such correlation was apparent. Yet, when they compared brain size to diet, it was found that the primates that eat fruit had brains 25% larger than those that ate other plant material.

The problem with such reports is the attempt to fit observations into a mythological evolutionary paradigm. There is no justification from the research to suggest that primates evolved into humans, by eating a few more apples. Yet the Telegraph cannot resist jumping on this factor, with this headline: Would you Adam & Eve it? Fruit may have been the making of mankind. Mankind did indeed become what he is today, by eating a fruit, which God had commanded them not to eat. But that was not evolution. That was sin!

We thank You, Lord God, for making so many diverse animals, including these beautiful apes. We also thank You for gifting men and women to be able to study these animals, to find out more about Your creation. Amen.

SOMETHING NEW UNDER THE SUN

Ecclesiastes 1:9

The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
There are some who think that the book of Ecclesiastes is a depressing book. The writeran old man, called Qohelet (the Preacher)seems to be musing on a life of achievement, that he now thinks is meaningless.

The key to understanding where Qohelet is coming from is his oft-repeated phrase under the sun. By using the phrase under the sun, Qohelet deliberately creates a hypothetical, human-centered world, where God is not in control. Over and over again, throughout the book, he shows logically that a world without God, under the sun, cannot explain what he already knows. In argument after argument, he shows that the obvious consequence of a world without reference to God is absurd. Then, in just one place, in chapter 1:9, he states that there is nothing new under the Sun. Yet, his whole argumentation, from a worldly, godless viewpoint, is, I submit, designed to lead us to consider that there is something new under the Sun. There is, in fact, a breakthrough, to what must be over the Sun that is the realm of God. By showing that there is no meaning to a world without God, Qohelet implicitly informs us that true meaning is found only by referencing everything in our lives with God.

For this reason, he concludes his book, by twice reminding us to Remember your Creator. In a book, reminiscent of any guidebook on Presuppositional Apologetics, Qohelet is insisting that by reference to the Creator everything around us makes complete sense.

Thank You, Father, that You are in complete control of this world. Forgive me for the times, when I have lived my life, as if You were not there. Help me to make You central to all that I do. Amen.

FOCUS ON THIS

Proverbs 20:12

The hearing ear, and the seeing eye, the LORD hath made even both of them.
I need to wear my glasses for distance vision. I read books just with my eyes, but I cannot see things far away clearly.

Inside your eye, there is a lens, which focuses the light from images onto a focal point on the retinaa black surface at the back of the eye. Unlike the lens in a camera, this lens is squashy. It is attached to tiny muscles, that stretch or squash the lens. Presumably, the muscles in my eye are not capable, any longer, of stretching the lens to its thinnest widths. This, like every other deterioration in our bodies, is a product of the Fall. But the working of the eye is something fascinating to us, when we start from a biblical presupposition.

God tells us in Proverbs 20:12 that He made both the hearing ear and the seeing eye. For an eye to see, several mechanisms have to work together. The lens focuses the light on to the retina. As we have discussed, there are muscles to change the shape of the lens, to view objects at different distances. The iris and pupil allow different amounts of light into the eye. Light sensors respond to the light, which falls on them, and the optic nerve transmits this information to the brain. There would have been no purpose in the lens mechanism evolving, if there were no retina, on which to focus the light, or nerve to transmit the signal. But the Bible makes clear that God designed the eye to see, and He did this, with all the myriad important mechanisms required. We are indeed fearfully and wonderfully made by God.

We have read, Lord, that we are fearfully and wonderfully made. The more we find out about how You put us together, the more we stand in awe at Your might, and praise Your Name. Amen.
