ICE AGE OR GREENHOUSE?

Genesis 8:22

"While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease."
It is interesting to look at scientific predictions made, say, a generation ago. Here is one that appeared in the December 1977 issue of Science Digest predicting our future climate. This article pointed out that the world's climate is already cooler than at many points in recorded history. It said that at one time Greenland was actually green and England was a major producer of wine. The article noted that while a few scientists think the Earth is warming, most climatologists agree that Earth's climate is definitely cooling. Some even say that we may be in for a new Ice Age. The words "Ice Age" evidently caught the media's attention. Some listeners will recall the same message given on radio and TV.

The certainty of evidence for a cooling Earth is interesting in light of the same certainty, a quarter century later, that the Earth is heating up! And notice how both predictions are working from almost the same temperature records. The article noted the reason for this early fear: the winter of 1976-77 was especially cold and snowy for much of the northern hemisphere. Then, a decade later, after a warmer summer or two, we hear about a runaway "greenhouse effect." Our best response is to remember the Lord's promise to Noah that the seasons, seedtime, and harvest will continue until the end of the world.

Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I ask that You would protect me and all who are Yours from the fears which so terrify a world which neither knows or regards Your promises. Help Your people to be lights in the midst of this darkness. Amen.

RESEARCH SURPRISES SCIENTISTS WITH BIBLE'S ANSWER

 Ephesians 6:1

"Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right."
Parents today are under a lot of pressure to be more "permissive" and less "authoritative" in raising their children. Research has now shown the results of this progressive thinking.

In a study of 124 youngsters conducted over a twelve-year period, researchers studied parenting styles and the effect of each style on the development of young people. Researchers divided the parenting styles they saw into categories ranging from parents who didn't seem to care to those who were extremely demanding and restrictive while offering their children little emotional support. They found that parents who consistently set down clear standards of conduct and clearly defined limits, while offering close emotional support, produce teenagers who fared better in academic tests, are emotionally more stable, and are much less likely to be involved with alcohol or drugs than any other group. The so-called "democratic" parenting style, they noted, produced far more heavy drug users than parents who set limits. They also noted that restrictive parents who offer little emotional support for their children tend to produce teens who, while not heavily involved with drugs, are less happy with life and fall below average on academic tests.

Researchers concluded that the limit-setting, rule-enforcing parents who offer strong emotional support to their children are the most successful parents. And this is exactly the style of parenting Scripture teaches us.

Dear Father, I ask that You would provide good support and instructions through fellow believers for Christian parents so that fathers would seek to be toward their children as You are toward us. Amen.

THE SCUBA BUG

Romans 1:20

"For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:"
The familiar little insect known as the water boatman is a marvel of engineering design. About an inch long, it swims on its back on the surface of the pond using two of its legs that are extra long and have little paddles on the end, just like the oars of a boat. Anyone who has tried swimming on his back knows how difficult it is to see where he is going, but not the water boatman. His eyes are especially placed for perfect sight while swimming on his back.

As mentioned, the boatman is an insect so, of course, it does not have gills like a fish, yet he spends a lot of time under water. How does he do this? Well, his Creator gave him the ability to breathe through his tail that he sticks out of the water just like a snorkel tube. There are tiny hairs that keep the water out of this tube while he draws fresh air in to refill his air tanks for another dive. Those tiny hairs also tell the boatman whether a nearby movement in the water is something that would threaten him or something that might be good for lunch.

Surely, the specialized features of this little insect could not have gradually developed by trial and error but are evidences of superb design and a master Designer.

Dear Lord, even though the creation has been scarred and damaged by sin, its beauty and wonder is still marvelous to behold. For this I thank You as I look forward to seeing the New Creation. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

HOW DO PLANTS KNOW IT'S FALL?

1 Corinthians 15:37-38

"And that which thou sowest, thou sowest not that body that shall be, but bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of some other grain: But God giveth it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body."
In the fall the plants and trees of much of the Earth's northern hemisphere prepare for winter. Flowers lose their petals, and the leaves fall from trees as the air begins to become cooler. But there is far more to this change in the plants than simply a response to lower temperatures.

Many, if not most, plants measure the relative length of darkness to light in a 24-hour day to tell them to prepare for winter. In a similar way, they measure the relative length of light to darkness to tell them to prepare for spring. Other living plants seem to integrate time and temperature to prepare for the seasonal change. Apple buds, for example, need 1,000 to 1,400 hours of near-freezing temperatures before they even think about spring.

When winter finally arrives, we may wake up to what is a white and seemingly sterile world. It is then hard to believe that the plants and trees are out there sleeping while measuring time and temperature to be awake again in the spring.

It is no less a mystery to all of us that one day the dead will rise and believers will spend eternity with their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Yet, life rising so gloriously out of the apparent dead of winter shows a similar power of our Creator on a smaller scale.

Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I look forward to the time when You shall return to Earth and raise me and all believers to life once again. Help me each day to prepare for eternity with You. Amen.

TRULY MATED FOR LIFE

Genesis 2:24

"Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh."
Did you know that some fish actually go fishing? Yes, the female anglerfish lives deep down where it is cold and dark, and it has a six-inch-long fishing pole fixed to its top lip with a little orange light on the end. When the angler is not fishing, the rod fits into a groove on the top of its head. The angler's victim swims along and sees the orange light - the bait - to him, it looks like a good lunch for a small fish. He moves in, but it jumps out of reach and the next thing he knows he becomes the angler fish's lunch!

The strangest part of the anglerfish's life is its mating practices. While the female is over three-feet long - and the mouth takes up almost half this length - the male anglerfish is only a half-inch long. He has no fishing pole and no light. Mating starts when the tiny male swims up to the female and sinks his teeth into her side. He never lets go for the rest of his life. In fact, soon his skin and circulatory system actually join the female's, and through this union they become, literally, one flesh. Eggs are eventually laid.

Our Creator has an infinite variety of ways to reproduce the species but this one demonstrates quite literally the one-flesh principle of human marriage.

Dear Lord Jesus Christ, at virtually every wedding we remember Your presence at the wedding at Cana where You did the first miracle of Your ministry. Help me always to keep my marriage relationship as You intended it, and through it become enriched. Amen.

CREATION DESIGN: 9.19.14

THIS WORM GIVES GOD THE GLORY

Job 36:3

"I will fetch my knowledge from afar, and will ascribe righteousness to my Maker."
When scientists completed the first genetic map of an animal, they found that the results have the signature of our Creator all over them. This animal is the nematode, a very small worm. Even though it has only about 1,000 cells, it is very much like more complex animals. It has a nervous system, a brain, and it reproduces sexually. Scientists picked the species because, being transparent, it would be easier to work with.

Scientists had thought that the six-chromosome worm would have about 6,000 genes. But after they examined the 97 million bases in its DNA, they discovered that it has about 20,000 genes. They believe that about 3,000 of those genes are essential for all animal and human cells. This means that as scientists learn about these genes, they will also be gaining knowledge about those same genes in our bodies. The most important genes are clustered in the center of each chromosome, while the less essential genes are positioned at the end of each chromosome. They noted that the most important of the genes have more protection in the center of the chromosome.

Not only is the genetic code of this nematode much more complex than originally thought, but also it is elegantly designed. The genetic code itself is a sophisticated information system which could never have come about by chance. But now we learn that our all wise Creator has also given special protection to the most essential of our genes by placing them in the middle of the chromosomes. The more we learn about how we are made, the more of the glory of our Creator we see in His excellent work.

Father, I thank You that we are so wondrously made. Help me never fear that new knowledge will take Your glory away. Amen.

AN UNUSED RELIGIOUS ICON?

Psalm 9:17

"The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God."
Are we Christians becoming less able to defend the truths of Scripture, like creation? Dozens of studies show that not only are we, as a group, less ready to defend the hope that we have in Christ, but also we are less able to explain why we have that hope.

George Barna, president of the Barna Research group, has analyzed data from 28 religion surveys that he conducted between 1987 and 1996. In 1992, nearly 50 percent of those polled said that they had read the Bible during the previous week. By 1996, that figure had dropped to 34 percent. Yet, in another 1996 poll, 80 percent of those polled said the Bible is the most influential book in human history, and 76 percent said that the Bible is important to them.

Barna concludes from this kind of information that for many Americans, the Bible has turned into an unused religious icon. The result is a general biblical ignorance. Barna documents this fact with examples from other surveys. For example, 80 percent of those asked thought, incorrectly, that the statement, "God helps those who help themselves" was in the Bible. In another instance, 50 percent of those polled thought that Jonah was a book of the Bible while 10 percent thought that Joan of Arc was Noah's wife.

If we are to defend the great truths of the Bible - like creation and the flood - and show their relevancy to Christ's saving work, we must each look at ourselves. Shouldn't we all study the Bible more than we do?

Dear Father, increase in me a desire to study Your Word so that, with Your help, I can be more prepared to witness the hope of salvation I have in Jesus Christ. Amen.

SOCIAL SPIDERS

Job 8:13-14

"So are the paths of all that forget God; and the hypocrite's hope shall perish: Whose hope shall be cut off, and whose trust shall be a spider's web."

A family reunion among spiders is not a pretty thing. Many of the some 35,000 species of spiders begin eating their siblings as soon as they hatch. For this reason, spiders are typically lone hunters. Evolutionists have always explained that spiders evolved this way because it works best for them.

But a few species of spiders are social. They live together in large communities, caring for each other's young and working together to get food. Their social structure is not like that of bees or ants; but, as one researcher put it, spider society is more like a herd of wildebeests. A South American social spider lives in multi generational colonies that can have hundreds of thousands of members. Australia's crab spider is also social, building a nest of eucalyptus leaves. The colonial orb weaving spider of Mexico and the U.S. Southwest builds huge colonies out of individual orb webs. The largest colony web ever found was 12 feet deep, six feet high and 600 feet long. It contained hundreds of thousands of members!

Evolutionary scientists have been struggling not just with an explanation for how social spiders evolved, but how it happened independently among eight unrelated families of spiders. But the answer should be obvious. The same Creator Who made the wildebeest a herd animal also made social spiders the same way. He did it so we might recognize His existence and then learn of His love for us in sending His Son to be our Savior.

We praise You, Father, for the amazing creativity with which You have signed Your creation so we might seek You. Amen.

ONE OF SIN'S EFFECTS ON FROGS

Romans 8:22

"For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now."
Researchers have been trying to find out what is causing frogs to grow extra legs, or in some cases, grow no legs at all. While frogs with extra legs or no legs have been reported for centuries, there was some question about whether the incidence was increasing. Some suggested human pollution was to blame, while others suggested an increase in ultraviolet radiation was causing the problem. But none of the suspected pollutants have yet been found in association with deformations in the wild. Now some answers are beginning to emerge.

Two different research papers point to a parasitic flatworm as the culprit. A study of deformed frogs in California showed that the ponds with deformed frogs also had a species of snail that hosts the flatworm. A second study in the Pacific Northwest showed that the pattern of malformation in frogs followed the pattern that is typical of parasite damage. Researchers there said that the pattern rules out suspected human pollutants called retinoids. Other researchers pointed out that flatworms will probably not be the cause in every case; they still suspect human pollution but have been unable to prove it.

We know that the real cause of these frog deformations is ultimately human pollution. That pollution is called sin. It was man's sin that brought decay and death to God's original perfect creation because disobeying God does have consequences. The whole creation groans under the consequences of man's sin. That's why God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to deliver us from the ultimate consequences of our sin. Someday He will return to deliver all believers and the creation from sin forever.

Father, help me be prepared for the return of my Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

WHY ARE YOU?

Genesis 1:27

"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them."
When you know who made something and why it was made, you know the purpose of the item. That's true of can openers, and it is true of human life. Anyone who doesn't know who designed us or why is almost certain to be confused about their purpose in life.

For generations, evolutionary scientists tried to explain our origin by comparing fossilized bones. But more recently, they have turned to comparing the genetic material of current human groups. You might remember when scientists announced that they had discovered that all living people could be genetically traced to a woman in Africa many long evolutionary years ago. They called her "Eve." Today they admit that this picture is a little simplistic. Further studies have led to two contradictory theories. In the first, all humans today evolved from a single African population. The second position is that modern humans are the result of the interbreeding of populations from Africa, Asia and Europe. Some also admit that the flaw in both positions is that the same genetic data can be interpreted to support either theory.

The major flaw in all of these studies is that they assume man is a product of evolution. As long as evolutionary science refuses to consider God's account, which says He made us, it will be without a solid scientific basis to answer questions about why. And people who do not know why they were made are almost certain to live empty, purposeless lives.

Dear Father, I thank You that You have made me and that You have given me forgiveness through Jesus Christ. Amen.

HOTHEADS VENTING HEATS ANGER

Ephesians 4:31

"Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice."
For years those filled with anger were advised to vent their anger. Supposedly, venting one's anger - hitting a pillow, breaking things, yelling - would get rid of the anger. To many people, such advice seemed contrary to the spirit of Scripture. And a few more conservative voices in the counseling community maintained that far from dealing constructively with anger, venting actually increases it.

A Duke University study has documented that venting not only increases anger, but is actually bad for one's health. In one study, researchers randomly assigned reading to 600 college students. Some students read pro venting articles, others read anti venting articles, while others read articles on unrelated subjects. Students were asked to write an essay on the article they read. Then, each was given negative comments about their essay - comments designed to make them angry -followed by the opportunity to hit a punching bag. Finally, each student was paired with an opponent in a competition that offered an opportunity for aggression.

Researchers found that students who read a pro venting article were twice as aggressive as the others. Aggression levels were also linked to how much the students liked hitting the punching bag. Other studies have shown that anger doubles or triples one's chance of having a heart attack, and long term anger is linked to other health problems as well.

Science has again "learned" what the Bible has always taught: anger is not good for you or anyone else.

Forgive me, Father, and take all anger from my heart so that I may show Your love to me in Christ to those around me. Amen.

DOCTORS STUDY GOD

John 11:11-12

"These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well."
Physicians have been mystified by and are in the process of studying GOD. But in this case, the acronym "GOD" stands for "generation of diversity." The diversity that amazes them is the diversity found in our immune system. While we have fewer than 100,000 genes, our immune system is able to generate tens of millions of distinct antibodies to defend and protect itself from disease. How can only 100,000 genes produce thousands of times that many antibodies?

Actually, we have two immune systems. The first is called the innate system. This rapid response system relies on common characteristics found in most microbes to bind and conquer them. The second immune system is called the combinatorial immune system. It is this second immune system that generates tens of millions of different and very specific antibodies. Its response is slower than the innate system because it responds to an infection by making and sending a variety of antibodies at invaders. Depending on which antibodies recognize the invader, the combinatorial system then begins to manufacture more specific antibodies until the invader is conquered.

Researchers studying the details of the immune system are astonished at how evolution could design such a complex, ingenious and precise system. Even from a scientific standpoint, the simpler explanation is that our immune system, like everything else, was created by an all wise, all-powerful Creator!

I thank You, Father, for providing us with immune systems, and I ask You for good health. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

AMERICAN FLASHERS

Matthew 5:16

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."
Some time ago here on Creation Moments we did a program about Asian fireflies that flash in unison. The unspoken question was, "Aren't there some American species that flash in unison?" Someone in Tennessee who saw the same reports on which our program was based had the answer to that question. She contacted a researcher at Georgia Southern University to report an American species that clearly flashes in unison. At first, researchers had a difficult time believing that there were other firefly species that could accomplish this difficult task. But now several American species that flash in unison have been identified.

The newly identified species is found in the eastern United States, as far north as Pennsylvania and all the way down to Georgia. Another species has been found in Texas. Yet another species is found in the Gulf states. In each case, the males synchronize their flashes, creating a dramatic light show. Some species flash in unison for hundreds of flashes, producing shows that last up to three or four minutes.

Researchers have tried to explain this complex behavior in what is supposed to be a simple species. What troubles them is that every explanation they come up with credits the firefly with having some sort of pacemaker in its tiny brain. To those with an evolutionary view, this is unacceptably complex. But for those of us who know we have an all wise Creator, the synchronized flashing of fireflies is but another sign of the excellence of His work.

Father, let my light shine before men so that others may see Your work. Amen.

HOW MUCH DOES SCIENCE KNOW?

Genesis 1:11

"And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so."
What's left to be discovered? Many people have the idea that scientists have discovered just about everything when it comes to everyday subjects. Sure, scientists are searching for cures for many diseases and making discoveries of new atomic particles. But when it comes to common things, say botany, even many scientists think everything has been discovered.

But a few botanists realize that even when it comes to wild plants in North America, a surprising percentage of these plants still have not yet been discovered, named or described scientifically. One modern botanist who holds this belief has named 118 new plants, discovered 61 distinctive varieties and 57 recorded plants that have been named as new species. While some of the newly discovered plants that have been found relatively recently are in remote locations, many are seen by people every day. A member of the lily family that was first described in 1972 grew only 10 miles from downtown San Francisco. What is now known as Morefield's leather flower was discovered in 1982 on a vacant lot in suburban Huntsville, Alabama. Botanists working in this field estimate that 5 percent of North American plants still remain either undescribed or undiscovered.

God created such a variety of plants that modern science still has not even discovered all the living plants around us. This truth should tell us that modern science cannot tell us that God did not create this wonderful variety and beauty.

Father, we thank You for the variety and beauty that You have built into the plants around us. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

 EVOLUTIONARY PREDICTION FAILS

Genesis 1:24

"And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so."
Scientists who believe in creation often point out that when we finally learn the genetics of a creature, that information doesn't match its supposed evolutionary history. There are many examples of this, and a new example was reported in the scientific literature at the end of 1998.

Evolutionary scientists had theorized that turtles were the last survivors of a very early group of creatures that later evolved into reptiles, birds and mammals. Their reasoning for this lies in the type of skull turtles have. Most reptiles and birds have two holes on each side of their skulls, behind their eyes. But turtles stand alone in having none of these holes. So they were classified as a separate evolutionary branch. But a comparison of the genetics of the turtle and other reptiles now places turtles among reptiles. They are not related to any supposed ancestor of reptiles, but rather are closest to alligators and birds. While some evolutionists are critical of this study, the study itself is the second that places turtles among the modern reptile family.

As more genetic information has become known in recent years, the relationships revealed have not generally been what evolutionists expected. And this is exactly what those who believe in the Creator would expect. So next time someone tries to tell you that belief in the Creator is ignorant and unscientific, just remember the turtle!

Dear Father in heaven, I thank You that true knowledge glorifies You. Help my life and witness glorify You as well. In Jesus' Name. Amen.

THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD PARENTS

Ephesians 6:1

"Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right."
Do good parents undo their best efforts when they place a child in day care? Who has more influence on a child's development when that child must be placed in day care? Recently we have heard about many studies, some of which arrived at conflicting conclusions. Some said that parents have little or no effect on their children's development. Others concluded that day care doesn't influence a child's development at all. Now unique new research seeks to clear this up.

This two pronged research effort is unique because it relied on direct observation of children and caregivers. The first prong of the study, funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, observed 1-3 year olds in over 1,300 families. These families ranged from stay-at-home moms to those who used day care. Home backgrounds were studied, mothers were videotaped, and children were tested for language development and similar skills. This part of the study concluded that mothers who are warmly involved with their children had the greater influence on their child's development. They also concluded that average children who go to day care and have an involved, caring mother will be stunted by poor day care, but modestly helped by good day care.

The second prong of the study rated day care in nine states, and then extended its results to the entire country. They rated 61 percent of day care programs as "fair" or "poor, " with 39 percent rated as "good" or "excellent." What's clear from these results is that in God's order of things, nothing can replace good parenting!

Lord, help me to be a good parent and to be good to my parents. Amen.

ONE SMELLY AMOEBA

Job 9:25-26

"Now my days are swifter than a post: they flee away, they see no good. They are passed away as the swift ships: as the eagle that hasteth to the prey."
Not all dangerous predators can be seen. One of the most dangerous predators in a drop of pond water is Amoeba proteus. This amoeba literally terrorizes its one celled pond mates because they can smell him coming to engulf them. Among his favorite snacks are one celled creatures of the genus Euplotes. But Euplotes can defend themselves. When some members of this genus smell the amoeba coming, they dart away to safety. Others can grow pikes to defend themselves. Some can even grow hard shells to protect themselves.

This scenario leaves a problem for evolution. What benefit to a predator is there in warning its prey? Evolution should have selected against the amoeba's ability to produce its unique scent, called the A factor. Now a new discovery has revealed the amoeba's scent is really a clever design, pointing to a Designer. These amoebas reproduce by splitting, so they are surrounded by clones. The A factor is just strong enough to allow the proteus to identify clone mates so that they don't eat each other, but not so strong that it prevents proteus from getting enough to eat.

God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to save us from another unseen predator - the devil. The evil in the world is the warning scent of the devil's presence. God has placed many evidences within the creation that He is the Creator so that as our relatively few days on this earth flee by, we will be drawn to His Son. Believing in Him, we will receive forgiveness and salvation from sin, death and the devil.

We thank You, dear Father, that in Your love, You sent Your Son to save me from sin, death and the devil. Amen.

UNNATURAL SELECTION?

Luke 12:33

"Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth."
Just about every public school textbook once included the example of the peppered moth. The moth is used as a prime example of natural selection. Supposedly, as the trees in the English countryside began to be covered with coal pollution in the mid 1800s, the light colored tree trunks became darker. The peppered moth exists in two varieties - black and white - and was said to rest on the tree trunks. As the trunks turned black, the white variety was more easily seen and picked off by the birds, leaving the black variety to multiply. Students are told this is natural selection.

But since the 1980s, numerous studies of moth populations and how they live have called the use of the peppered moth as an example of evolution into serious question. Several additional population studies in polluted and unpolluted forests show little correlation between whether there are lighter or darker moths. After pollution control laws went into effect in England, the population of dark moths decreased in the north but increased in the south! In addition, the nocturnal moths do not rest on the tree trunks during the day, but stay hidden under the branches higher in the tree. In the famous photograph shown in every biology textbook - of a pair of moths resting on a tree - the moths were actually glued to the tree trunks to provide the picture!

Let's not give away the treasures of the truth of God's inerrant Word for the false treasure of earthly theories which deny our Creator.

Thank You, Father, that Your saving Word is trustworthy. Amen.

GLOW, LITTLE OCTOPUS

John 8:12

"Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life."
The deep, dark depths of the ocean are filled with many varieties of luminescent creatures. But among the octopus there are only two or three species in which the females develop luminescent rings around their mouths. But that has all changed with a remarkable series of discoveries about an already-known species of octopus.

The red octopus, Stauroteuthis syrtensis, lives in the deep waters off the east coast of the United States. In 1997 a foot long specimen was being studied. When the scientists turned off the lights in the lab, they were amazed to see the octopus's suckers glowing. The blue green glow, they discovered, glows brightest at 470 nanometers, a frequency that travels well under water. Scientists say that this glow might explain how the octopus makes its living. It doesn't eat what most octopods eat. Rather, it eats tiny crustaceans whose shallow-water cousins are drawn to light. If the deep-water versions are drawn to light, all this clever little octopus needs to do to eat is turn on the porch light. The frequency of the light and the unusual diet of this octopus all provide evidence of God's all wise design. If these special features had depended on chance to develop, this octopus would have never come about.

God is the Creator and Source of all light. The perfect light of His truth in the Gospel shines at just the "right frequency" to draw us to the forgiveness of sins and salvation found only in Jesus Christ.

Father in heaven, we thank You for the light of the Gospel which brings us to the light of the life Christ has won for us. Amen.

 "TOO MANY NOTES"

1 Chronicles 13:8

"And David and all Israel played before God with all their might, and with singing, and with harps, and with psalteries, and with timbrels, and with cymbals, and with trumpets."
Perhaps you remember the line from the film Amadeus in which someone observes of Mozart's music, "Too many notes." That statement reflects some people's opinion of Mozart's highly complex music. But researchers are finding that this mathematical complexity may be the reason for what some call "the Mozart effect."

Researchers at several universities around the United States have confirmed that Mozart's complex music has positive effects for both adults and children. In one study, rats were subjected to Mozart for 12 hours a day, beginning four weeks before birth. A second group heard only silence, a third heard only a constant hissing sound, while a fourth group heard only minimalist composer Philip Glass. When the rats were old enough to run a maze, they were tested. The Mozart rats not only ran the maze considerably faster than any of the others, but they made fewer mistakes. Other research has shown that adults do better on intelligence tests after hearing Mozart. While this effect is temporary in adults, children exposed to Mozart show a permanent improvement.

It is thought that the complex nature of Mozart's music encourages the brain to make more connections within itself. The more connections you have, the smarter you are. Surely music is a gift of God that benefits us and could never exist in a universe created by the forces of chance.

Thank You, Lord, for the gift of music. Help me to use music to praise You and to tell others of Your salvation. Amen.
